Despite the low usage, it looks like Meta is making progress with generation two. With the new smart glasses you can stream video live to Facebook and Instagram and even hear reactions from the people watching your stream, Roettgers said in August: “Livestreamers will be able to communicate directly with their audience, with the glasses relaying commentary via audio through the built-in headphones.” The Wall Street Journal reported that the new smart glasses will have “improved battery life and better cameras” and are expected to be released in the fall or spring of 2024.
Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The company is hosting its Connect conference on September 27 and 28, so perhaps we’ll hear more about these new smart glasses during the show. At that event we already know that Meta plans to share more about the Meta Quest 3, which will be released this fall. That device also recently passed the FCC, so I suspect Meta will meet that deadline.
