The 8 best hotels in Amsterdam (updated 2023)

Amsterdam, one of my favorite cities in the world, will always have a very special place in my heart. It’s one of the places I visited on my first European backpacking trip in 2006, and I’ve been back countless times since to explore every nook and cranny of this beautiful multicultural city.

Although the city is perhaps best known as a place where you can indulge in all kinds of hedonism, the city is so much more than that. With fantastic parks, beautiful cafes, world-class art museums, charming canals and a rich history, there are loads of things to see and do here.

But whatever you come to see or do, your hotel choice can make or break your visit. All great neighborhoods to stay in, these are my recommended picks as the best hotels in Amsterdam:

1. Hotel Rho

Hotel Rho is located right on Dam Square, right on the edge of the De Wallen district, home to Amsterdam’s oldest church, a cool craft brewery, lots of cool cafes and restaurants, and of course the famous Red Light District. This hotel offers simple but comfortable rooms in a beautiful Art Deco former theater. An extensive breakfast buffet is available as well as free coffee and tea in the lobby. The central location and price are unbeatable.

2. Park Plaza Victoria

Located in the Central/Centrum district (across the street from Central Station), this hotel is housed in a 19th-century neoclassical building and offers beautiful views of the city. There is an indoor pool, sauna and gym, and the rooms all have Egyptian bedding, walk-in showers and in-room coffee and tea. Downstairs there is a stylishly decorated restaurant that serves Dutch and international dishes. I love staying here. It is great value for your money.

3. Max Brown Museumplein

Max Brown goes a step further for a mid-range hotel in the Museum Quarter of Amsterdam. The rooms have lots of natural wood tones, lots of light, comfortable beds and cozy sheets, desks and the showers have good water pressure. Bike rentals are available to help you explore this incredibly cycle-friendly city, and the hotel’s beautifully designed café offers daily bread deliveries from local bakeries. There is also a hotel bar open 24/7.

4. Hotel La Boheme

Located on Leidseplein, I like this area because it is right across from the huge Vondelpark. There’s lots to do here, but the area doesn’t have the hustle and bustle of the Red Light District, so it’s much calmer and quieter. As for the hotel, the hotel has simple but clean and comfortable rooms in a homely atmosphere (there is even a hotel cat and a hotel bar with board games). Single rooms have a shared bathroom, while all others have a private bathroom. The staff is very nice and always ready to help you with anything you need. There are not many mid range hotels in this part of the city and I think this is the best value for your money.

5. Lord Albert

This stylish hotel is located on the edge of the Pijp, a hip neighborhood adjacent to the Museum Quarter (one of my favorite parts of the city). Sir Albert’s rooms all have high ceilings and large windows, and the more luxurious rooms on the top floor even have cathedral ceilings. The on-site izakaya serves delicious Japanese tavern dishes. As a guest you also have free access to a nearby gym and spinning classes, and bicycle rental is also available on site.

6. Hotel Okura

This high-rise five-star hotel, also located in De Pijp, is located directly on a canal and has a fantastic view of the city. The spacious rooms are opulent, with incredibly soft beds and furnishings, and the bathrooms all have large bathtubs and rain showers. There are four gourmet restaurants on site, two of which have Michelin stars, as well as an indoor swimming pool, wellness center with spa and gym. This is one of the nicest hotels in the city. If you want luxury, stay here!

7. Bed & Breakfast West Violet

After De Pijp, the Jordaan is my favorite part of the city. It’s a vibrant area, packed with luxury boutiques, elegant restaurants, relaxed cafes and lovely pubs. This cozy bed & breakfast with resident cat is located in the heart of the Jordaan, in a quiet street. There is a guest kitchen stocked with ingredients if you want to prepare your own meals, and breakfast is free too. The rooms are simple and airy, but include a desk. It is a cozy place with very hospitable owners.

8. Conservatory Hotel

This former conservatory, located in a gigantic neo-Gothic building, is the epitome of Dutch luxury. The 129 rooms have beautiful views of the neighborhood, soft mattresses, rain showers and beautiful hardwood floors. There is also free bicycle rental, an award-winning spa with a state-of-the-art indoor pool, sauna, hot tub, hammam and massages, and a yoga studio. There are several dining options, including a restaurant, bar and lounge. It is the most beautiful place to stay in the Museum Quarter.

Amsterdam can be busy in the summer, but it is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Europe. And there are plenty of top-notch, affordable hotels to choose from, whatever your needs and budget. Choose one of the hotels from this list for your next stay and you won’t go wrong.
