Beeper Mini is back up and running on Monday as a free iMessage texting app on Android, but with a number of adjustments in response to the service lost connection to Apple’s messaging service late last week.

In addition to being free now, Beeper announced in its blog post that the service now requires an Apple ID to function and phone number registration has not yet returned. While Beeper outlined in its launch blog posts that the service will not retain Apple ID credentials, for now this brings Beeper back to a similar disadvantage that other third-party iMessage services face by needing that information that may be tied to other services and subscriptions.

Text messages can also only be sent from an Apple ID email address for now, rather than from your phone number. This is similar to using iMessage from just a Mac or an iPad: a contact using an iPhone may want to save your Apple ID email address to display texts in the same way as those coming from your phone number .
