The tight-lipped Maxwell produces all-time great innings to help Australia beat Afghanistan in Mumbai.
Australia have reached the semi-finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 thanks to an all-time great One-Day International (ODI) innings from Glenn Maxwell as they defeated Afghanistan by three wickets in Mumbai.
Maxwell, badly cramped and struggling to run, scored 201 points as the five-time world champions produced a stunning turnaround to beat a confident Afghan side at Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday evening.
It was a record chase at the stadium in Mumbai and it came after Australia were reduced to 91-7 in the 19th over after Afghanistan opted to bat first and posted a total of 291-5.
“The most remarkable thing you will ever see in cricket,” shouted former New Zealand cricketer Ian Smith on commentary as Maxwell hit a six to seal victory for Australia and make 200 runs for himself.
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who has won three World Cup titles, said Maxwell played the inning “without legs”.
“I’ve played a lot of cricket and seen a lot of cricket but I’ve never seen anything like it,” said a stunned Ponting, adding: “It’s something you’ll never see again in international cricket. ”
