Elon Musk unveiled a funny AI chatbot called Grok this weekend.
His artificial intelligence startup’s new product, xAI, is “modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and “is designed to answer questions with a bit of humor and has a rebellious streak, so please don’t use it if you hate humor ,” the company said in a blog post announcing the launch Saturday evening. “It will also answer tough questions that most other AI systems reject,” xAI said.
Although xAI is not yet at the level of OpenAI’s GPT-4, it hopes to quickly expand Grok’s capabilities. “Grok is still a very early beta product – the best we could do with two months of training – so expect it to improve rapidly each week with your help,” xAI said.
“Oh, this will be fun,” says Musk tweetedadding that Grok will be available for X Premium users who pay a subscription fee of $16 per month.

XAi said Grok will access data from Musk’s X – formerly Twitter – to provide “real-time knowledge of the world.”
The company warned that “as with all [large language models] trained on next-token predictions, our model can still generate false or contradictory information.”
Still, we believe AI has enormous potential to contribute significant scientific and economic value to society, so we will work to develop reliable safeguards against catastrophic forms of malicious use, xAI said. “We believe we must do our utmost to ensure AI remains a force for good.”
