Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna called in his place after Pandya missed India’s last three matches with an ankle injury.
India vice-captain Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2023 Cricket World Cup due to an ankle injury.
Pandya, 30, was injured while trying to stop the ball from his own bowling alley with his left foot during India’s victory over Bangladesh on October 19.
The all-rounder has missed India’s last three matches and fast bowler Prasidh Krishna has now been called up in his place.
“Hard to digest that I will miss the remainder of the World Cup,” Pandya wrote on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday.
“My thoughts will be with the team and I will be cheering them on with every ball of every match.
“Thank you for all the wishes, the love and support has been incredible.
“This team is special and I am sure we will make everyone proud.”
The poise that Hardik, who took five wickets in the tournament, brought to the Indian side was seen as crucial to the hosts’ hopes of lifting the trophy.
Wins against England, New Zealand and Sri Lanka without him have allayed many fears.
Mohammed Shami, 33, is the player India have turned to so far to fill the gap left by Pandya, and the right-armer has claimed 14 wickets in those three matches.
Krishna, 27, played in 17 one-day internationals and two Twenty20s for India, claiming 33 wickets.
