Both ASKET and Mott & Bow produce high quality standard T-shirts, but ASKET’s extensive choice of sizes, including width and length, should ensure that everyone can find something that looks and feels great. Uniqlo seems to have created a valuable, indestructible design that will last for years, while Colorful Standard proves that pre-washed, hipster-approved organic T-shirts can look great on all body shapes.
Of the two custom brands, Son of a Tailor was far superior to Spoke. The use of quality (albeit not organic) Supima cotton in varying weights, combined with a flattering, premium look and the ability to customize subsequent designs, sets them apart, despite the odd discrepancy in sizing. Spoke failed to impress, although the remake of Chris’s original shirt was a significant improvement.
Taub is not surprised that the online algorithm approach is not yet infallible. “People who have no experience with entering their measurements is flawed. You can never get a customer to send their measurements accurately. I’m also surprised that none of these brands ask for a simple photo because that would really add dimension.”
But he does admit that “if you understand that the first T-shirt [ordered online] won’t be the best, and instead consider it a journey with a brand that you are willing to trust and support – and that will still be around in the future – and you will learn what is a good fit for you . Through trial and error you can get a custom fit from a factory-made garment. But from what I’ve seen so far, none were really better than going to each store for two days and checking them out for yourself.”
