“Two days ago I woke up to the shocking news that Matthew Perry is no longer with us,” Hayek, 57, wrote via Instagram on Monday, October 30. “It took me a few days to process this deep sadness. A special bond is created when you share dreams with someone and work towards them together.”
In her post, which featured photos of the couple over the years, Hayek posted a screenshot of Perry responding to a fan question via Instagram Story. Perry co-starred with Hayek as real estate developer Alex Whitman in the 1997 romantic comedy.
“Last year I was very touched when Matthew shared on his Instagram Stories how much he loved him Fools rush in, and how he thought the film we made together was probably his best film,” Hayek wrote. “Over the years, he and I have reminisced about that meaningful time in our lives with a deep sense of nostalgia and gratitude.”
News of Perry’s shocking death broke on Saturday, October 28. The actor, who was 54, was found unconscious in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, but authorities say foul play is not suspected.
“My friend, you are gone far too soon, but I will continue to cherish your foolishness, your perseverance and your sweet heart,” Hayek concluded. “Farewell, dear Matthew, we will never forget you.”

Since his death, Perry has been honored both on social media Saturday evening live, which dedicated the October 28 episode to him. At NHL games across the country there is an orchestral version of the iconic Friends theme song “I’ll Be Here For You” by The Rembrandts was heard in the arena. Adele even paused her show during her Las Vegas residency to talk about him and dedicated her song “When We Were Young” to Perry.
Throughout his life, Perry was outspoken about his struggles with addiction to drugs and alcohol, which began after a 1997 jet ski accident. Henk Azariawhich featured a guest Friends as Phoebe Buffay’s (Lisa Kudrow) love interest, credited Perry with helping him get sober in a heartbreaking video posted on Sunday, October 29.
“I’ve been a sober man for seventeen years, and I wanted to say that the night I went to AA [Alcoholics Anonymous]Matthew brought me in,” he recalled. “I was sober the entire first year, we went to meetings together. He was so caring and giving. He completely helped me get sober. And I really wish he could have found it in himself to stick with the silver life more consistently.
