Denim isn’t usually at the top of my shopping list, but every fall I edit the jeans selection I have in my closet and see what new fits I need for the season. Right now I’m all for a high, straight leg that’s slightly cropped. Even though that’s my current go-to fit, I still wear skinny and slim jeans paired with my tall boots and recently I’ve also embraced the wide leg. The kick flare is also still a style I gravitate towards, but less so these days.
Before we get into exactly what denim I’ll be wearing this fall, I wanted to share a little more with you so you can keep it in mind as you go through my recommendations! I’m 6’2″ and wear a size 25. I have a fairly average hip size, but I would say they fit a bit narrow. I generally prefer denim with stretch as it is more forgiving and comfortable, especially in the waist. Even though I will be wearing rigid denim, it has to fit me PERFECTLY so I can really commit. My favorite denim brands at the moment are J.Crew/Madewell, MOTHER Denim, Frame and RE/DONE. I’m always open to testing new brands and recently added some Sezane denim options to my closet. Now let’s take a look at the pieces I like for fall, plus a few pairs that unfortunately didn’t work out for me.
Denim: MOTHER Tomcat Only in ‘Cannonball’
Sizing: TTS I wear size 25
Why I love it: This dark wash is a great shade to wear casually or dress up. While still considered a straight leg, this pair is much slimmer through the thigh with an easy opening at the leg. As you already know, I love ankle lengths and think these hit just the perfect spot!
What to wear them with: I’m pairing these with this TNuck top (sleeveless version here), these heels I’ve written about here before, a Mark Cross bag, my favorite sunglasses under $40, and this new blazer from Sézane .
Denim: Pistola Ally Jean
Sizing: TTS I wear size 25
Why I love them: These jeans have only about 1% stretch and are one of the thicker, stiffer denims in my closet. I love how the lighter wash gives a nod to the ’90s nostalgia trend going on right now. This pair has a great high waist, but is relaxed around the thighs and legs. I have not had this brand before and was pleasantly surprised by the fit. I’ve been finding more and more ways to wear these. You can see here how I combined them with sneakers.
What to wear them with: These jeans look so chic, back to these Amazon heels, this Vineyard Vines cable sweater layered over this J.McLaughlin turtleneck, and last but not least, with this amazing Alaia cape I found at The Real Real hung.
Denim: Sezane Le Crop fit in ‘Denim’
Sizing: TTS I wear size 25
Why I love them: I always try out new denim shapes depending on the trend. Although it doesn’t always work, it’s nice when it does – like in this case! I like wide leg jeans, but sometimes I think they look a little too sloppy. The proportions have to be just right for me to be able to commit. This denim from Sézane ultimately turned out to be a real winner. They have a great length and offer the right balance of wide legs, without being overwhelming.
What to wear them with: These wide legs look great with these cute shoes I just bought, this sweater from last fall, this Cara Cara top and this new jacket from ME+EM.
Denim: MOTHER Tomcat Fit in ‘Kneeling on Stones’
Sizing: TTS I wear size 25
Why I love it: If you’re looking for a great pair of straight leg jeans, the Tomcat is one of my favorites! I also still swear by these J.Crew slim straight legs, but I like to have options. The waist of this one is high and the length is slightly shorter. This wash feels like a perfect everyday wash and goes with almost everything in my closet.
What to wear them with: These pair so well with this Blaze Milano blazer , Vineyard Vines sweater , Tanya Taylor sweater , Age of Innocence flats , $15 comfy sunglasses , and this Prada bag I picked up a few months ago The Real Real found.
Denim: Current/Elliott Silletto, a skinny jean under $100 that I love
Sizing: TTS I wear size 25
Why I love them: Even though skinny jeans are no longer my go-to jeans, I still need at least one pair in my closet to wear knee-high and thigh-high boots. I’ve owned this pair for almost 10 years now and still love them. They are by far the lowest rise I have in my closet, but they usually go well with my longer fall sweaters and jackets. If you’re looking for an option under $100, these are great!
What I’m wearing them with: Right now I’m wearing my skinny jeans with these under $100 boots , this La Ligne sweater , and this long duffle coat from Zimmermann .
Denim: MOTHER Tomcat in ‘X Marks the Spot’
Sizing: TTS I wear size 25
Why I love them: The Tomcat strikes again – this time in a different shade! This black/gray denim is a color that I initially wasn’t sure I would wear too often. Surprisingly, they are now some of my most worn denim!
What to wear them with: The Tomcat in this shade looks great with Adidas gazelles, this Vineyard Vines turtleneck paired under a fisherman sweater, and a Carven cape I picked up from Hampden in 2013!
While I wanted to take a moment to highlight the latest denim options I’m loving this season, I also wanted to highlight some of the styles I still own and love, like this J.Crew straight pipes and these RE/DONE kick flares. . I also want to highlight a few pairs that I was hoping I would like, but unfortunately didn’t work for me.
SLVRLAKE London Jean: I mean, these look so freaking good on the model and they couldn’t have looked more different on me. They were just a little too wide all over the leg and too long. That combination forced them to pee and just look a little saggy versus straight at me!
AGOLDE Pinch Waist: This is another denim I’ve seen on so many other influencers and they look fantastic. For me the story was a little different. I don’t have a big butt and these denim and pants that are adjusted for more room in the seat make them look too baggy in the crotch area. That was the case here and I’m so bummed because the hand feel and washing of these are great.
A few more denim trends I won’t be trying this season – denim maxi skirts and the barrel legs. I love seeing how many stylish makers I follow have worn these styles, but right now I just feel like they’re not for me. But never say never, right?
