If you want to dine like New York’s media elite—particularly like Times columnist David Brooks—a New Jersey restaurant will let you do it, at a much lower price.
In a now-viral post on Pollsters say they believe the American economy is in bad shape, while the numbers say otherwise.
His meal consisted of a hamburger, fries and what seemed like a generous shot of whiskey.
Now Maurice Hallett, owner of airport restaurant Smokehouse BBQ, is offering the same combination for the low price of $17.78 – yes, with a double shot of booze – at his 1911 Smoke House Bar-B-Que restaurant in Trenton, NJ . . He calls it the ‘D Brooks Special’.
Hallett told the news site NJ.com that he cannot publicize the deal at the airport itself because rents there are too high.
Burgers cost $17 to $18 at the airport, so Hallett said he suspects it was the alcohol portion of Brooks’ bill that made it so steep. “He must have knocked back a lot of drinks,” Hallett said.

Hallett and his team clearly enjoyed their 15 minutes of fame. On its Facebook page, the restaurant even said, “Thanks Dave Brooks for the free publicity,” though it requested that the columnist use the restaurant’s hashtag (#youcantbetourmeat) in future references.
MarketWatch reached out to Hallett and Brooks for comment and did not receive an immediate response.
