Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) exposed Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan’s (R-OH) attack on democracy, which he tries to disguise as a weapon of government.
At a momentous moment in our history. The country is about to face a great test. I don’t mean one of the various trials against the former president, but rather a trial, the proposition that we are a nation of laws committed to the rule of law and that no one is above the law. It is a proposal known around the world because it is the one essential ingredient in all democracies. We have all professed our belief in this principle, but it has never really been put to the test.
It’s not like it is today in this committee: we are involved in part of that process. The chairman would abuse the power of this committee by attempting to interfere with the prosecution of Donald Trump by attempting to use the committee’s subpoena to compel criminal discoveries, making the committee a sort of criminal defense agency for the former would become president. In doing so, the chairman of this committee would arrive at a very different proposal through Mr. Jordan’s actions. He would establish the principle that the rule of law should apply to virtually everyone, but not to the leader of his party.
According to this alternative proposal. If you are the President of the United States and lose your re-election, you can break the law and the Constitution to try to stay in power. And if you’re successful, maybe you can be president for life, and if you fail, there’s no consequences. This position is also well known in the world and is called dictatorship.
Mr. Jordan hopes to camouflage his attack on the rule of law by falsely claiming that Donald Trump is the victim of unequal justice. And Hunter Biden is a beneficiary. It is a claim that is as transparently political as it is devoid of any factual basis. And it is cynical, based on the belief that the American people cannot distinguish fact from fiction. But my guess is that American history has shown that those who bet against her are rarely successful and more often end up embarrassed.
Jim Jordan’s plan isn’t just about helping Trump. It’s also about expanding presidential power and ending democracy. Rep. Schiff labeled it perfectly. Jordan hopes the American people are too stupid to separate fact from fiction. They are blinded by the idea that Biden and Trump are two sides of the same coin and send Trump back to the White House.
The entire nation needs to see that Jim Jordan is trying to end democracy through a false claim of arming the government.
This is not about arming the government. It’s about the democracy that Jim Jordan is trying to destroy for Donald Trump.
