After a thumping 5-1 defeat to China, India are gearing up for their next match at the 2023 Asian Games where they will take on arch-rivals Bangladesh.
The 20-man Indian team faced major problems in the first match. They arrived just a day before the match, leaving no time for proper training. To add to the challenges, the team consisted of a number of inexperienced players who had not played together before, making their conditions far from ideal.
Despite these obstacles, India showed resilience on the field even after conceding an early goal. Goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh emerged as a standout performer and made a crucial save through a penalty. Moreover, Rahul KP’s powerful strike just before half-time leveled the score and raised India’s hopes.
As the match progressed, the fatigue and lack of playing time became apparent and the hosts eventually secured a convincing 5–1 victory.
However, not all is lost for Igor Stimac’s team. Two teams from each group will advance to the knockout rounds, along with the four best third-placed teams. India’s path to the round of 16 remains open if they can secure a win in their upcoming match.
While they are certainly the favorites to win against Bangladesh and Myanmar, their fitness could be a major problem in the final two matches of the group.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Myanmar, leaving the country in a similar situation to India. They will be keen to pick up three points against their arch-rivals, but India have a significant upper hand in this match as they have won 16 times compared to Bangladesh’s two.
