New Meet The Press moderator Kristen Welker didn’t get off to an encouraging start, as she let Trump lie without any reluctance and treated him like a normal candidate rather than a defendant trying to overthrow the US government.
Here’s how Welker described Trump on MSNBC:
I think you’ve heard former President Trump getting fired up about a lot of these issues and trying to create a sharp contrast with President Biden. We must say that production has increased in recent years. I thought it was remarkable. He would like to win the support of autoworkers.
I read back that statement from the union president and it underlined how difficult that will be. The union has not supported President Biden. By taking a step back, it speaks to the importance of the unions in the coming elections and of this state. This is a state, Michigan, that former President Trump won in 2016 and lost in 2020. It’s always close. He clearly plays a very strong role in it too. Of course, leaning on his deal-making status, which of course he talks about a lot.

If you watch the clips of Welker’s interview with Trump, you wouldn’t know that the former president attempted to overthrow the United States government after losing a legitimate election less than four years ago. Welker got Trump to lie about Jack Smith, electric vehicles and his criminal charges.
Chuck Todd wasn’t the biggest problem on Meet The Press. and anyone who believes in the mythology of Tim Russert should go back and watch some full episodes of Meet The Press. Russert chose Chuck Todd as his successor. Todd chose Welker to follow him.
Trump threatens to destroy democracy if he returns to the White House, and Meet The Press’ response is one to deal witht Trump like any other candidate.
Welker’s clips with Trump are proof that the media will not try to uphold the country’s democratic institutions. By treating Trump like any other candidate, they enable his efforts to destroy democracy.
