With so many businesses fleeing crime-ridden Chicago, including grocery stores, the city’s new mayor, Brandon Johnson, wants to open grocery stores that would be city-owned.
What could go wrong?
Does Johnson think city-owned stores won’t be robbed like privately owned grocery stores?
Breitbart News reports:
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson wants to open city-owned supermarkets
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) is exploring opening the city’s taxpayer-funded supermarkets in areas where businesses have retreated because of rampant crime.
Johnson announced a partnership with the Economic Security Project to explore the possibility of opening city-owned grocery stores. The first step in the partnership will be to conduct a feasibility study, but the city did not provide a timeline Chicago Tribune reported.
Johnson claimed his government is “committed to promoting innovative, whole-of-government approaches to tackling these inequalities.”
The mayor said in a statement:
All Chicagoans deserve to live close to convenient, affordable, and healthy groceries. We know that access to grocery stores is already a challenge for many residents, especially on the south and west sides. A better, stronger, and more secure future is one where our youth and our communities have access to the tools and resources they need to thrive. My administration is committed to promoting innovative, whole-of-government approaches to addressing these inequalities.
Sounds quite socialist, doesn’t it?
When the government controls the means of supply and distribution and sets prices… where did I hear that? https://t.co/uIEqYeYdb0

There’s bad idea written all over it.
Let’s see…large, successful retailers and grocery store operators have pulled out of certain zip codes due to chronic crime, but the city of Chicago will install and manage taxpayer-subsidized stores. What could go wrong? https://t.co/uqb7AFlRtb

Within a few years, this program would be bloated, bankrupt and full of corruption.
