New York Fashion Week always involves one too many over-the-top outfits (at least for my taste). Sure, it’s a great opportunity to experiment in the locker room and create combinations that you would normally consider too much for every day at the office. But sometimes appearance goes too far. Then there are the masters, the people who can style those bold pieces just right and ensure that their outfits suit the occasion and don’t require any adjustments.
One of those sartorial masterminds is Olivia Wilde (not to mention her stylist Karla Welch), who arrived at the Michael Kors Collection Spring/Summer 2024 show in Brooklyn this week and perhaps rocked the boldest trend of 2023 wore: hot pants. Tiny in size but huge in impact, the tiny shorts that are popping up all year round are shockingly difficult to style in a low-key, approachable way. And yet that’s exactly how I would describe Wilde’s look, which included brown suede shorts, a matching cashmere sweater, sheer tights and a floor-length coat, all designed by the man of the moment, Michael. Kors. She also added her signature Ray-Ban Wayfarers, of course, and knee-high suede boots from Stuart Weitzman. Just like that, Wilde cracked the code for styling hot pants for fall: add a maxi coat, tights and boots, and voila! A totally wearable way to wear bottoms that are just inches away from underwear (although I’m a bit of a fan of that trend too…).
