Tense conversation about ‘The View’
Entertainment Weekly reported that McConaughey, 53, went on “The View” Tuesday morning to promote his new children’s book “Just Because.” He initially got along well with the 80-year-old Behar and even bizarrely gave her a barefoot massage, but things took a turn when the conversation turned to his possible run for office in his home state of Texas.
“As far as office goes, I will always gauge which category I can be most helpful,” McConaughey said.
“Do you think you can get elected in Texas because you’re anti-gun?” Behar asked.
This seemed to strike a chord with McConaughey, who pondered the question for a moment before putting his finger in Behar’s face.
“One thing about me and politics is, to give you a direct statement, I’m playing a game that I’m not interested in,” he said.
A visibly nervous Behar responded by telling McConaughey he didn’t have to say anything if he didn’t want to.
The show then went to commercial, and when it returned, the co-hosts again briefly touched on McConaughey’s gun pose.

“I wanted to say that I’ve done a lot of research in terms of your advocacy, and I don’t know if you’re against gun laws. I think you are for gun responsibility and legislation,” said co. -host Sunny Hostin.
The show cut to a segment where a wax figure of McConaughey was revealed. Watch the full McConaughey interview in the video below.

McConaughey’s gun pose
McConaughey was born and raised in Uvalde, Texas, where a mass shooting occurred in 2022 that left 19 children and two teachers dead. Afterwards, McConaughey went to the White House to plead with both Democrats and Republicans for gun reform. Daily Mail reported that McConaughey was visibly emotional as he claimed that the Second Amendment was being “hijacked” by “deranged individuals,” claiming that “responsible gun owners” were “fed up.”
“We must muster real courage and fulfill our mortal obligations rather than our party memberships, and take enough countermeasures,” he said. “We cannot be true leaders if we only face re-election.”
“We need to look in the mirror, lead with humility and recognize the values that are inherent in, but also above, politics,” McConaughey continued. “We must make choices, take positions, embrace new ideas and preserve the traditions that can create real progress for the next generation.”

‘We must restore our American values’
McConaughey went on to talk about the importance of “American values.”
“We need to restore our family values,” he said. “We must restore our American values. And we need responsible gun ownership.”
“This should be a nonpartisan issue,” he later added. “There is no Democratic or Republican value in a single act by the shooters. There is no. But those in power have failed to take action. We ask you, I ask you, will you please ask yourselves: can both sides rise above it? Can both parties look beyond the current political problem and admit that we have a problem with preserving lives?

While McConaughey wants gun reform laws, he probably wouldn’t support the radical gun legislation that a far-left party like Behar would want. So it’s not surprising that he didn’t agree with her calling him “anti-gun.”
It will certainly be interesting to see what kind of politician McConaughey would become, should he ever decide to run for office.
