We are monitoring an increasing threat for a series of severe storms moving across the region on Thursday evening.
TIMING: Thursday 4:00 PM – 11:00 PM
IMPACT: Damaging straight-line winds, large hail and some brief tornadoes possible.
SPECIAL FEATURES: A very warm and humid afternoon is expected Thursday, with highs in the mid 80s and muggy dew points in the mid 60s. A cold front approaching from the northwest will produce afternoon thunderstorms over central Missouri and Illinois. A strong line of storms from near St. Louis will push southeast into our area early this evening. There will be a very unstable atmosphere present that could fuel storms, which will likely lead to an increased risk of several strong/damaging wind gusts along the leading edge of these storms. There likely won’t be enough wind shear to support a major tornado threat, but a few short spin-up tornadoes cannot be ruled out.
ACTION: Plan your Thursday evening activities with the possibility of rapidly changing weather in mind. Make sure your WPSD Radar app is turned on and notifications are turned on so you can get alerts when they are issued for your area.
