I take no pleasure in uttering a clichĂ©d phrase like “shoes make the man.” But beyond the tired, gendered connotations, the saying contains some truth: My shoe choice helps me tap into different sides of my style and personality. As an actress, I know that putting on a specific pair of shoes can influence my choices. I’ve been putting on shockingly high heels (even if they’re off-screen) to help me find character. What I put on my feet literally affects the energy of my step that day.
But everything that has the power to give can also take away.
