“Basic technologies such as bicycles, clean-burning wood stoves and even the humble apple corer seem to offer many advantages with fewer disadvantages. The more advanced world-changing technologies not only have the most disadvantages, but also tend to create their own needs. Take cars as an example. They initially allowed us to get seats faster, but the end result was that the places people needed to go tended to get further apart. Now we can’t do without them anymore.
Some technologies deliver the opposite of what they promise. For example, social media should bring us together, but loneliness is ubiquitous in our society. A recent survey found that 61 percent of Americans, 3 in 5, describe themselves as lonely. The Plains Indians of the 19th century probably had little trouble with loneliness. They lived in tribes of about 300 people and the boundaries between family and community were quite blurred. In fact, the entire tribe was someone’s family.
Choose your technologies wisely. I live in Maine, where snow is plentiful. My neighbor’s snow blower requires gas and maintenance and sometimes gets clogged or breaks down. My snow shovel has never broken and is helping me maintain 6-pack abs at age 65!-Well said.
