Does the industry you work in have a “dirty little secret” that you think people should know about?
Reddit user Thealexiscowdell1 recently asked the question, “What’s one ‘dirty little secret’ about an industry you’ve worked in that people outside the industry should really know?” and thousands entered the chat to spill the tea.

“They put little weights in lipsticks to make them feel more expensive so they can charge more.”

Caressing your food
“We touch your food with our hands. Foreign. And yes, we wash them so often that they can fall off. That, or you get holes that wear gloves for twelve hours and never change their gloves or wash their hands.

Fragile?
“No one who actually sorts mail cares about your package. The word fragile doesn’t stop them from throwing it 20ft into a metal container.”

Only 30 seconds

‘Locksmith here. We can get into any lock/door within 30 seconds. All the posturing and bringing out an impressive toolbox and hammer drill is just showmanship to extend the call. 30 seconds flat.”

Ignorant
“In the consulting world, no one really knows what they are doing.”

Find a credit union
“Wells Fargo (and other banks, WF is just the worst I’ve had experience with) likes to find ways to illegally charge you. They then end up getting sued, paying a fine that is less than 1% of the profit they made on those charges, and then finding a new, slightly different way to fuck you even more. Rinse and repeat.
Find a good credit union. Megabanks will screw you all.’

Sharp corners in hotel housekeeping

“Hotels do not replace the duvet on the beds between guests unless there is a noticeable stain on it. If the pillows are placed on a chair instead of the bed at check-out, housekeeping will assume they have not been used and place them back on the bed without changing the pillowcases. This is all down to housekeeping cuts as the carers have strict timers for each room and they have an insane amount of rooms to do every day.”

Hire a life coach
“No one should really hire life coaches unless they like to give money away. There is no real licensing agency, training, expectations, etc.
They are literally just random people who like to give advice.
Reddit gives out crappy advice for free, you might as well try that first.”

Just sneak it in
“My friend worked at our local movie theater (AMC), he told me that the signs out front say ‘No outside food or drinks’ but their policy says they can’t search or stop people even if they have obviously something. I told this to another friend and he went with a whole tai dinner and a large soda at the gas station next week, the cashier said it smelled good lol”

Overmedication
“The old people in nursing homes are given too much medication to keep them docile.”

Publish a book
“I used to work in publishing.
You don’t have to pay independent publishers to publish your book. You can self-publish ebooks, hard and softcover books, and even audiobooks with little upfront cost.
You don’t have to pay hundreds or thousands to have someone edit or clean up your manuscript; you can find someone on Fiverr for pennies on the dollar.
The publishing company I worked for charged about 8-9 cents per word for editing, then outsourced the work to a Fiverr contractor for 1-3 cents per word.

Is that acceptable?
“I was dating a girl who was a food scientist and there is an ‘acceptable amount’ of contaminants in food. Like mold and rat feces.”
