A Tornado Watch is in effect until 8 p.m. Friday for much of the Local 6 area. (Another watch will likely be issued later today for areas east of this current watch.)
Intense wording with this watch from the Storm Prediction Center…
***This is a very dangerous situation***
Numerous severe thunderstorms are expected to form and spread across the mid-Mississippi Valley region this afternoon and early evening. Supercells damaging tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds are all possible. The parameters are sufficiently favorable for the risk of strong/violent tornadoes.”
Remember… a Tornado WATCH means WATCH OUT. Conditions favor the development of severe thunderstorms that can produce tornadoes within hours. If a tornado is spotted or detected on radar near your community, a Tornado WARNING will be issued.

The Storm Prediction Center has now listed most of the Local 6 area in a rare level 4 “moderate” risk for severe storms, including tornadoes. This outlook is reserved for cases where there is a chance of widespread, intense severe weather. By comparison, the last Level 4 risk was April 13, 2022, when there were six confirmed tornadoes in western Kentucky, and several instances of wind damage. Prior to that, other level 4 risk days include:
- December 10, 2021 Tornado outbreak
- February 28, 2017 Perryville, MO EF-4 tornado
- November 17, 2013 Brookport, IL EF-3 tornado
- February 29, 2012 Harrisburg, IL EF-4 tornado
That’s not to say that this evening will play out exactly like all of these events, but the environment in our area will be similar to the environments of those dates.
We expect storms to form in SEMO between 2pm and 4pm, which will then move eastward during the evening, with the threat moving east of our area around 11pm – midnight. Storms will move at speeds of 80 to 120 km/h, so if a warning is issued for your area, act quickly.
There is a possibility that supercell thunderstorms could develop. These would carry a greater threat of tornadoes…and a long-term strong tornado is possible somewhere in our region. If the storms form more in line, the damaging wind threat would be the main concern.
There is still some uncertainty about the amount of unstable air that will be there this afternoon, which could still be a variable that could limit severe weather. As of this morning, however, the forecast models show a more favorable climate for severe storms.

This will be a night when the weather takes priority. Make sure you have multiple ways to receive alerts, including your WPSD Radar app, enable government alerts (WEAs) on your phone, and your NOAA weather radio. Charge your devices this afternoon. Be sure to review your family’s emergency weather plan so you know where to go if an alert is issued for your community.
